I'm Jason Matheny. Chances are, you have no idea who I am. That's ok. I'm just a sports fan from Jacksonville, Florida. I'm not an athlete (as you can see from me chugging down that Newcastle in the photo to the right), but I am still trying to make a life out of what I love - sports. I am a weekly columnist for RotoWorld where I write about fantasy football, player rankings, and gambling. I was also a producer for a few sports talk shows on XM/Sirius Satellite radio as well as a few other big names I won't mention.
More Points Than You
This blog has been a dream of mine since I started writing in college. Let me rephrase.
There are a lot of sports blogs out there on the web. But ‘More Points Than You’ isn’t designed to just be just another sports blog. It’s a haven for fans across the world to rant about things they love and hate about sports.
I want MPTY to feature arguments about the most and least important things about sports. From uniform colors to rule changes, MPTY will be a leader in looking past the stories of the mainstream sports media. Too often the MSM runs too formulaic a method – statistics and quotes. And neither is particularly important to me.
The site will give you a sense of passion. MPTY is here to serve the fan who wants more than power rankings and press conferences. We, as fans, devote so much of our lives to sports; it makes no sense to stand for with cookie-cutter coverage.
Sports blogs should be more than lists and one-liners, and I don’t intend to do either many of them. Nothing is easier than coming up with a bad list of ‘best dunks’, ‘worst hairdos’ and ‘hottest cheerleaders’, complete with a groaner after every entry.
Speaking of cheerleaders, let me make it known – MPTY will not be a vehicle for showing random pictures of hotties. I feel very strongly about not mixing my sports with the ‘junk culture’ of the world. At MPTY, you’re going to get sports without having to wade through hours of stories about the random crap that most blogs think are interesting. We aren’t Slate, The Politico, Rolling Stone or The Drudge Report. While these sites have their places in the world, we aren’t here to write about music, television, movies or politics. Expect sports. Lots.
Finally, accountability is important to me. Nothing is worse than the talking heads who spout garbage just to be controversial. My plan is to give constant opinions on what I observe. I am not here to be a sensationalist – sports are wild enough that I don’t need to come up with contrived controversial topics to build interest. There’s no stirring the pot; it’s all about getting sports passion out in the open.
I plan to keep a running tally of my predictions and will post that total in every post. Imagine how much less credibility the talking heads would have if their predictions percentage were plastered in front of them every time they spouted nonsense?
So, to recap:
1. Passion about Sports – We love sports. From fantasy teams to gambling, we devote so much of our lives to it. So why would we settle on coverage of it that’s any less passionate than we are?
2. No Garbage – I'm not here to write fluff pieces and bad lists.
3. No Eye Candy – If you need a sports site to find pictures of women on the internet, you need more help than I can ever provide you.
4. No Sidetracking – Not much about music, politics, television, movies or anything that isn’t strongly related to the sports world. I love you Peter King, but I'm not interested in writing about Starbucks.
5. Don’t Stir It Up – While I welcome controversial topics, it won’t come from anywhere but my real opinions.
6. Accountability matters – My predictions will be right in front of you. You decide what you think.
